Pisces

Pisces runs from February 19 to March 20 — a mutable water sign ruled by Jupiter in traditional astrology and by Neptune in modern practice. Its stones are the most fluid in the zodiac: blue, violet and translucent, with a strong preference for stones that look like water.

The Pisces Stone Set

Pisces is mutable water. Traditional pairing goes directly for the blues and violets of deep water. The most consistently assigned:

  • Aquamarine — Mohs 7.5–8 beryl, the March birthstone and the clearest match for Pisces' element.
  • Amethyst — Mohs 7 violet quartz, the February birthstone; the most common Pisces stone in modern crystal writing.
  • Moonstone — Mohs 6–6.5 feldspar with adularescent sheen; soft, but cleaves.
  • Clear quartz — Mohs 7, the neutral amplifier.

Durability, Ranked

Pisces' list is unusually good on durability for a water sign:

  • Aquamarine (Mohs 7.5–8) — the hardest stone on this page. Fine for rings and daily bracelets. It is a beryl, which means some brittleness, so avoid hard knocks.
  • Amethyst and clear quartz (Mohs 7) — reliable everyday wear.
  • Moonstone (Mohs 6–6.5) — has perfect cleavage, so a sharp impact can split it. Pendants and earrings are the safe forms.

Why These Stones

Pisces' association with water, imagination and permeability is why the stone list is dominated by translucent blues and violets. Aquamarine's name literally means seawater. Amethyst's traditional link to calm and clear perception is the other half of the pairing. In both cases the correspondence is cultural rather than measurable, but it is unusually consistent across sources.

Choosing for a Pisces

  • Bracelet — amethyst or aquamarine; both durable at Mohs 7 and above.
  • Necklace — aquamarine strands read as water and are the classic Pisces gift.
  • Pendant — moonstone, where the sheen shows and the stone is safe.
  • Ring — aquamarine only.

Dates and Birthstones

Pisces covers February 19 to March 20 in the tropical zodiac. February's birthstone is amethyst; March's is aquamarine. Pisces is the one sign where both birthstones appear on the standard sign-stone list, which makes shopping straightforward: either one is correct.
