Scorpio
Scorpio runs from October 23 to November 21 — a fixed water sign traditionally ruled by Mars and, in modern astrology, by Pluto. The stones paired with it are the darkest in the zodiac, which makes it the most distinctive-looking selection we carry.
The Scorpio Stone Set
Scorpio is fixed water. Traditional pairing favours deep, opaque, near-black stones that hide more than they show. The most consistently assigned:
- Black obsidian — volcanic glass, Mohs 5–5.5. The mirror-black stone most associated with Scorpio's reputation for truth-telling.
- Topaz — Mohs 8, the November birthstone; blue topaz in particular is the modern Scorpio stone.
- Malachite — Mohs 3.5–4, banded copper carbonate, associated with transformation rather than comfort.
- Black tourmaline — Mohs 7–7.5, the protective schorl, and the most durable of the dark set.
Why Dark Stones Fit
Scorpio's associations — depth, privacy, and the capacity to look at difficult things — map onto stones that absorb light rather than reflect it. Obsidian and black tourmaline are also the two stones most often described as protective, which is the other half of the tradition. It is worth saying plainly: these are cultural associations, not properties you can measure.
Choosing for a Scorpio — by Durability
- Black tourmaline (Mohs 7–7.5) — the most wearable. Good for daily bracelets.
- Topaz (Mohs 8) — hard and durable, though it has perfect cleavage; a sharp knock can split it. Fine for pendants and rings.
- Obsidian (Mohs 5–5.5) — a glass, so it chips. Best as a pendant.
- Malachite (Mohs 3.5–4) — soft and water-sensitive. Pendant only.
Dates and Birthstones
Scorpio covers October 23 to November 21 in the tropical zodiac. October's birthstone is opal or tourmaline; November's is topaz or citrine. Scorpio is unusual in that its most-worn stone (black tourmaline) is also the one with the longest protective tradition.
